Q. What is the difference between semi-permanent and demi-permanent hair colorants?

A. Semi-permanent hair colorants refer to direct acid or basic dye molecules that color the hair without a developer. With these colorants, ‘what you see is what you get.’ Some semi-permanent colorants may use an alkaline base to deposit color. Some may be used with peroxide to lift hair pigment.

Demi-permanent colorants refer to deposit-only colors that contain oxidative dye molecules in low alkalinity and low peroxide conditions. This results in minimal lift, less deposit than oxidative permanent color, and more permanency than semi-permanent color.
