Q. The bleach that I use states that I should not use a metallic container for mixing. If a metallic bowl interferes with bleaching, why wouldn’t highlighting foils also interfere?
A. This cautionary note applies to the use of copper and iron bowls which are not commonly used now due to more versatile and inexpensive stainless steel and plastic materials.
Copper and iron bowls can oxidize or rust very easily. This creates active metallic ions (strong catalysts) that penetrate into any liquid material contained in the bowl. These metallic ions can lead to the rapid decomposition of the bleach, accompanied with heat and reduction of lifting power.
Plastic, stainless steel and aluminum (as in foils) do not oxidize easily so that the bleach formula remains stable and highly effective when using any of these materials.
