Ask the Expert
Q. How many types of hair tint removers are there, and how do they work?
A: Dye molecules can be removed by using either reducing agents or oxidizing agents.
Reducing Agents
Sulfites or thioglycolate perform the opposite action as peroxide. These agents uncouple or change the shape of the dye molecule resulting in loss of color.
Pros & Cons:
- This is a milder process for the hair
- This type of remover requires extensive rinsing to remove all color from the hair.
- Some color may resurface after application of reducing agents.
Oxidizing Agents
Ammonium, sodium or potassium persulfate act by changing the structure of the dye molecule permanently and destroy the color.
Pros & Cons:
- This is a more effective process of color removal
- This type of remover leaves hair more stressed.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
