Highlighting Color Tips
Tips from Master Colorist Andre Nizetich (President of the American Board of Certified Hair Colorists):
- Thin sections of hair bleach faster than large chunky streaks. If you want large chunky streaks take several thin pieces.
- Formula consistency is important. Too thin and the formula will run, too thick and the formula will not penetrate through the strand.
- Be completely familiar with the formula you are using, you should be able to anticipate the highlighting time based on the level desired and the natural hair color level.
- A nice size stiff brush is one of the most important tools a hair colorist can have in his or her kit. Throw away limp wimpy brushes.
- Always mix small portions of the highlighting powder at one time so that it mixes better and stays fresh longer.
- Avoid using very warm water when rinsing out hair colorants. This applies to all forms of hair color.
- Never do a highlight you can't retouch. Look to your client as a long-term relationship.
- Keep color in tune with seasonal changes. Go lighter and brighter in spring and summer, warmer and deeper in fall and winter.
- One of the best ways to take years off a client’s look is to place soft highlights around the face.
